Jasmine Paolini has marked the close of a remarkable chapter, ending a ten-year alliance with Renzo Furlan. This partnership reached its pinnacle last year with them reaching Grand Slam finals, capturing Olympic gold, and Furlan earning the Coach of the Year accolade.
“After a fantastic decade together, I just want to express my deepest thanks to Renzo Furlan for all he’s done for me,” shared the 29-year-old Italian on Instagram, unveiling the “incredible journey” they had together.
Paolini’s progress under the guidance of her fellow Italian, Furlan, has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Last year, she reached the finals of both the French Open and Wimbledon, clinched doubles gold at the Paris Olympics, and played a key role in Italy’s victory in the Billie Jean King Cup, all while ascending to the world number four rank.
Furlan’s dedication did not go unrecognized, earning him the prestigious title of WTA Coach of the Year.
But now, things must change.
This season has been solid, though somewhat less dazzling, with Paolini exiting in the third round of the Australian Open and making it to the Miami semi-finals, where she was defeated by Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one and eventual champion.
“Renzo has played a crucial role in my development, both on the court and personally,” Paolini reflected.
“The lessons he taught me will stay with me and will guide me as I step into this new phase. He will always hold a special place in my life.”
In her heartfelt message, Paolini lauded the 54-year-old Furlan’s commitment, acknowledging the times he spent “far from home and his family,” concluding with “a lot of respect and gratitude.”
With the French Open set for May 25, the question lingers: Can Paolini replicate last year’s achievements without the guidance of the coach who helped her succeed?
