Today, the WBC gave fans and fighters alike a much-anticipated update on its roster of champions, stirring up some buzz with a couple of standout title fights on the horizon.
First up, Stephen Fulton, who recently claimed the featherweight throne with a 23-1 record and 8 KOs, has been ordered to face off against Rey Vargas. Vargas, holding a record of 36-1-1 with 22 KOs, previously wore the featherweight crown but was relegated to “champion in recess” status by the WBC last year. Honestly, it might have been easier to just strip him of the title. Back in 2022, Vargas narrowly clinched a victory against Mark Magsayo for the championship and has since only managed one defense—a draw against Nick Ball in March 2023.
Adding a layer of frustration is the sidelining of top contender Bruce Carrington, who would potentially put up a thrilling match against Fulton. While any change seems unlikely, there’s a sliver of hope that the WBC might reconsider.
Switching gears to the middleweight category, Carlos Adames, with a 24-1-1 record and 18 knockouts, is lined up for a mandatory title defense against Meiirim Nursultanov. Nursultanov, unbeaten with a 20-0 record and 11 KOs, has been out of the ring since November 2023. This matchup follows Adames’ split decision draw with Hamzah Sheeraz in February.
These proposed bouts are stirring the waters in the boxing community, promising fans some intense clashes and setting the stage for notable rivalries in the coming months.
