Alright, get ready for what some might call the “Le Comeback!” In a classic move that only Alizé Cornet could pull off, the tennis star has announced her return to the sport after calling it quits last year.
At 35, Cornet is set to hit the courts again, eyeing the Open Capfinances Rouen Métropole event in her home country of France as her tournament of choice. This comeback marks her first appearance since she officially bowed out from professional tennis at the 2024 Roland Garros, where she experienced a first-round loss to China’s Qinwen Zheng.
“My disappearance was greatly exaggerated! I’m back, and I’m thrilled to be reunited with everyone,” Cornet declared in a statement shared on the tournament’s website.
The Open Capfinances Rouen Métropole celebrated the news with a tweet, confirming that Cornet will indeed electrify their event. “Le come back de l’année c’est celui d’Alizé Cornet,” they announced with excitement.
Cornet herself is equally excited: “I can’t wait to play at the Open Capfinances Rouen Métropole. After getting back into training two months ago, this was the goal I set my sights on, and I must thank Charles (Roche) for the opportunity to slot directly into the main draw.”
The tournament directors have granted Cornet a main draw wildcard for the WTA 250 event slated for mid-April.
Reflecting on her illustrious career, Cornet reached World No. 11 in the rankings back in 2009, claimed six singles titles on the WTA Tour, and made history by competing in 69 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments, a streak running from the 2007 Australian Open until her retirement last year.
Charles Roche, the tournament director, couldn’t hide his enthusiasm: “It’s such a joy to welcome Alizé back to the Open Capfinances Rouen Métropole. She’s a force on the court and I have no doubt her competitive spirit will be a sight to behold.”
As Alizé Cornet prepares for her exciting return, fans everywhere are gearing up to watch one of French tennis’s greats back in action.
