Friday marked the end of a potential option for the Jets at tight end. Tyler Conklin, who has been a consistent presence for the Jets over the last three years, inked a one-year deal with the Chargers, according to the team’s announcement.
Joining the Jets as a free agent back in 2022, Conklin quickly established himself as their leading tight end. Throughout his tenure, he recorded a total of 170 receptions and scored seven touchdowns. Last season alone, he secured 51 receptions, covering 449 yards and adding four touchdowns to his name.
Conklin’s departure sharpens the focus on the gap that the Jets now face in their tight end roster.
There was a widespread anticipation that Conklin might continue with the Jets, especially given the scarcity of depth in that position. As of now, their lineup includes Jeremy Ruckert, Stone Smartt, Zack Kuntz, and Neal Johnson contributing a combined total of just 66 catches and a single touchdown in their careers.
This scenario has fueled speculation that the Jets might target Penn State’s Tyler Warren, a highly-regarded tight end, with their No. 7 overall pick in the upcoming Draft. A pick like Warren at this stage would be significant, ranking them as the highest-drafted tight end since Kyle Pitts, who the Atlanta Falcons selected fourth overall in 2021.
The Jets initially contracted Conklin on a three-year, $20.3 million deal back in 2022, bringing him over from the Vikings. He’s certainly proven to be one of the more astute signings by former GM Joe Douglas during his tenure.
