After Madison Keys tweaked her gear by switching racquets and strings, she went on to secure her first major victory in January. Now, there’s buzz that Stefanos Tsitsipas might be following a similar path.
This past week in Dubai, the Greek sensation was seen wielding a mysterious, sleek black racquet instead of his customary Wilson Blade. This new frame helped him clinch his maiden ATP 500 title. While the rumor mills suggest it’s a Babolat Aero, Tsitsipas hasn’t confirmed it yet.
José Morgado shared a sneak peek in a tweet, suggesting that Tsitsipas’s agent might want to finalize that racquet deal soon. The excitement around the potential new endorsement is palpable, especially since Tsitsipas himself admitted to transitioning to a new racquet. This change is aimed at gaining a strategic edge, particularly on courts and with balls that have been slowing down the game recently. Speaking to reporters, Tsitsipas explained:
“One of the main advantages is comfort, which was a key element I aimed to integrate into my game. With the way balls and courts have evolved over recent years, adapting became essential. I’m just looking for that extra something.”
In an impressive showing on Saturday, Tsitsipas defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-3 to win the Dubai final. This victory catapults him back into the ATP Top 10, ranking him at No. 9. With his newfound ‘secret weapon,’ many believe it’s only a matter of time before he rises back into the Top 5.
Reflecting on his racquet switch, Tsitsipas called the move a “no-brainer,” especially considering how things have changed from a few years ago. “It’s, let’s say, foolish of me not to try and make the change… These changes sometimes are necessary because you don’t want to be stuck in the same pattern over and over again. I feel like it’s something refreshing and a good addition so far. It definitely brings that refreshing feeling.”
