Earlier this month, a tragic event unfolded when Langston Sykes, a professional mixed martial artist who was 31 years old, was shot and killed during an attempted break-in at a home in Florida on March 4. At the time of the incident, multiple children and adults were inside the house.
Sykes, whose professional fighting record stood at 1-4, forcefully entered the residence. According to law enforcement, he charged at one of the people inside, prompting that individual to open fire in response.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Sykes, who was “unresponsive.” Officers attempted to provide first aid until emergency medical services took over, but unfortunately, Sykes could not be saved from his injuries, as noted in an official police statement.
After identifying Sykes, authorities revealed that one of the adults present had previously filed an active injunction against him. Initial findings from the investigation suggest that this might be a case of self-defense during a home invasion.
“The incident is truly tragic, and our hearts go out to everyone touched by this event,” stated Police Chief Gerald Butler. “From what we’ve determined so far, it seems to be a situation where a resident defended themselves during a break-in. Our detectives are painstakingly gathering all evidence to ensure a comprehensive investigation. We urge anyone with further information to step forward.”
Public records indicated that Sykes had multiple prior arrests and had served over a year in prison for grand theft auto in 2011 in Florida.
Tragically, Sykes leaves behind five children, adding another layer of sorrow to this already somber story.
