According to a piece by Fox Sports AU, former WBO super welterweight champion Tim Tszyu is gearing up to start his 2025 season with a bang. He’s planning to headline a pay-per-view event on April 6th, squaring off against Joey Spencer.
Fans won’t have to wait long for updates, as there’s a press conference expected to take place about 90 minutes after the publication of the article.
Reflecting on Tszyu’s setback in March 2024 against Sebastian Fundora, it’s clear that it was a tough but understandable loss. Tszyu was originally set to fight a veteran, Keith Thurman. But with last-minute changes, he faced Fundora—one of the most unusual fighters in the game. Adding to the challenge, he suffered a nasty cut early in the match that almost forced a halt to the bout.
The bout against Bakhram Murtazaliev a mere seven months later was a different story and didn’t unfold as expected. Tszyu was knocked down in the second round and couldn’t find his footing, resulting in a TKO loss.
The silver lining is that Tszyu, at 30, still has plenty of opportunities to bounce back. His upcoming opponent, Spencer, who holds a 19-1 record with 11 knockouts, seems like a suitable contender for this purpose. At just 24, Spencer has been on a comeback trail himself after a defeat to Jesus Ramos, securing three victories against opponents who are not at the peak of the division.
Spencer is someone Tszyu should be able to handle, but he’s competent enough to pose a real challenge if Tszyu isn’t back on form.
In Tszyu’s own words: “Having come off the back of two losses, suggestions came in for an easier fight or even facing local fighters. But aiming low has never been my style. Yes, things don’t always go perfectly, but that doesn’t change who I am. I want to take on the toughest, the meanest fighters out there to prove I’m still the real deal. It’s that simple.”
With Tszyu hungry to prove himself once again, the fight promises to be nothing short of thrilling.
