Cricket South Africa (CSA) has rolled out the central contract list for the 2025-26 season, which spans from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026. This freshly announced roster includes 18 players ready to don the Proteas colors in a busy year of cricket, featuring numerous bilateral series and two major ICC events—the World Test Championship Final and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. However, the notable absence of Heinrich Klaasen, a key player in South Africa’s white-ball squad over recent years, has stirred discussions across cricket circles.
Uncertainty Surrounds Heinrich Klaasen’s Future with South Africa
CSA has confirmed that Heinrich Klaasen, who stepped away from Test cricket in January 2024 and held a white-ball-specific contract, is not on this year’s central contract list. The door isn’t entirely closed on Klaasen, but the future is uncertain. CSA stated, "Discussions regarding Heinrich Klaasen’s future are ongoing, and a final decision will be made in due course." This comes amid reports that Klaasen might be pivoting towards a career in various T20 franchise leagues, sparking debates about his long-term commitment to the South African team.
Introduction of "Hybrid Contracts" Acknowledges Modern Cricket Realities
In a nod to the evolving nature of modern cricket, CSA has introduced "hybrid contracts" for the first time, accommodating players involved in global franchise leagues. Prominent players David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen are the first beneficiaries of this system. These hybrid contracts allow them to be part of selected bilateral series and ICC events without needing to commit to the entire season.
"The hybrid contracts consider the dynamic nature of modern-day cricket and will provide David and Rassie with the opportunity to contribute during specific bilateral tours and ICC events," CSA confirmed. This strategy aims to maintain a balance between meeting international commitments and acknowledging players’ growing engagement in global T20 circuits, hoping to retain key talent for critical fixtures.

Rising Stars: Lizaad Williams and Kwena Maphaka Earn Contracts
The central contract list for the 2025-26 season also highlights fresh talent making an impact. Lizaad Williams, a pacer from Momentum Multiply Titans; Senuran Muthusamy, an experienced all-rounder from Dafabet Warriors; and Kwena Maphaka, a promising teenage fast bowler from DP World Lions, have all received national contracts for the first time. Maphaka’s quick rise, with international debuts in all three formats this past season, marks him as a future cornerstone for South African cricket.
CSA’s decision to include these players emphasizes their dedication to fostering young talent and rewarding consistent domestic performance with national responsibilities. These emerging stars are anticipated to play pivotal roles, particularly in the upcoming home series against the West Indies and challenging overseas tours.
David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne, and Wiaan Mulder have all secured full national contracts following stellar performances across formats last season. Previously on performance-based retainers, their elevation to full-time contracts highlights their value to the team. This bolsters South Africa’s depth as they gear up for significant fixtures in the World Test Championship and World Cup cycles.
