When it comes to Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United, there’s one criticism that echoes among the fans: his hesitance to place trust in younger players. Despite the persistent injury challenges and lackluster performances from certain team members, Amorim’s justification for this approach hasn’t quite hit the mark.
Right now, opting for Chido Obi instead of Rasmus Hojlund seems like a no-brainer, though for Thursday night’s Europa League match against Real Sociedad, that switch isn’t possible. However, Amorim could shake things up defensively in the first leg by implementing a vital change.
Take the decision to substitute Victor Lindelof during the Fulham game as an example—it was a misstep that went awry. The Swedish defender seemed uneasy with and without the ball, and his missed penalty only sealed the game in favor of the Cottagers.
Lindelof’s struggles aren’t a recent development. He’s been faltering for years, yet somehow remains at Old Trafford, outliving players who probably should have stayed. With no plan to renew his contract, Amorim really has no reason to put faith in a player on his way out.
Looking ahead is crucial, and Amorim already has a promising option in Ayden Heaven, who was brought in with Patrick Dorgu back in January. The fact that Arsenal made significant efforts to sway him away tells you he’s a sought-after talent. Heaven left a strong impression when Amorim gave him his debut during extra time.
In just half an hour on the pitch, Heaven managed three clearances and won every aerial battle—an area where Lindelof often falters. His passing was perfect, including long balls, and most impressive of all, he wasn’t intimidated by the high-pressure environment, according to stats from SofaScore.
Heaven thrived in the physical matchup, which is again a weaker aspect of Lindelof’s game. Additionally, being left-footed, he fits well as a potential replacement for Leny Yoro, especially with Lisandro Martinez not available. Despite this, Amorim might still lean towards his seasoned defenders like Matthijs de Ligt, Yoro, and Noussair Mazraoui rather than starting Heaven.
Nonetheless, Amorim should consider the England U19 international over Lindelof, whose performances no longer align with United’s esteemed reputation. It’s about time Amorim focuses on the potential of the future rather than the familiarity of past choices.
