Molly McCann, a notable strawweight fighter in the UFC, decided to hang up her gloves after a tough first-round submission defeat to newcomer Alexia Thainara at UFC London last night, Saturday, March 22, 2025. The event took place at the O2 Arena in London, England, and certainly had its highs and lows (check out the highlights if you missed it).
Paddy Pimblett, one of McCann’s closest friends and a regular training buddy, attended the event. He couldn’t hold back his emotions during McCann’s farewell speech, visibly tearing up as she addressed the crowd.
Today, Sunday, March 23, 2025, Paddy, affectionately known as “The Baddy,” took to Instagram to express his feelings about his friend’s departure from the sport.
“Last night was really hard, watching my big sister step away from the cage,” Paddy shared. “I’ve been by her side from day one and that won’t change. Her journey in the ring might be over, but our friendship is rock solid. That’s a bond for life. Molly made a mark as a UK MMA icon—she was the first English woman to land a win in the UFC and delivered one of the most memorable knockouts in women’s UFC history.”
He continued with, “Her legacy is untouchable. Saying last night was emotional is putting it lightly. Even through my tears, Molly found a way to make me laugh when she quipped, ‘Haven’t done bad for a lesbo who was working in Subway, have I?’ Love you, @meatballmolly, always and forever, my big sis.”
Not being able to watch McCann and Pimblett compete together anymore is a bit of a downer for the UK MMA fans—they always brought a special kind of buzz to the arena. But, chances are they’ll still be spotted cheering together from the stands, which will surely lift anyone’s spirits.
Looking ahead, Paddy Pimblett is gearing up for his next bout at UFC 314 against Michael Chandler. The odds seem to be in his favor, as he’s currently pegged as the betting frontrunner.
