On Wednesday, Oklahoma took a significant step forward by announcing their new football general manager. They’ve brought Jim Nagy on board to oversee the team’s roster during these challenging times marked by NIL deals and the transfer portal. Nagy, who’s no stranger to the world of football, has been at the helm of the Senior Bowl as its executive director since 2018.
“This marks a fresh chapter in college athletics, particularly at a powerhouse like OU,” Nagy mentioned in the university’s statement. “The history of achievement here is a tribute to the strong leadership at Oklahoma and their drive to compete at the highest level. I’m thrilled to contribute my insights and dedication to this program. Through teamwork and hard work, I have no doubt we can aim for remarkable outcomes. I’m eager to settle in Norman and start this venture with Coach Brent Venables and his excellent staff.”
Nagy’s impressive career includes roles as an NFL scout with teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, and Washington. He has applied his expertise in scouting to pinpoint top-tier college players for the Senior Bowl, a notable pre-draft event that accounted for 110 draft picks just last year.
“Jim Nagy is a tremendous addition, bringing a wealth of knowledge, connections, and insights that align perfectly with our staff’s goals,” said OU’s athletic director Joe Castiglione. “His presence will strengthen our efforts as we strive for conference and national victories.”
In recent seasons, Oklahoma has had a mixed bag of results, wrapping up a 10-3 season followed by a 6-7 run, where they notched a 2-6 record in their first SEC season, including a win against Alabama.
Nagy is stepping into a storied program that hasn’t seen the College Football Playoff in four consecutive years. The Sooners are 22-17 under Coach Brent Venables, who took over from Lincoln Riley in 2022.
“The nuances of roster management—ranging from contract negotiations to evaluating talent and strategic planning—demand a dedicated approach and specific expertise,” said Venables. “Jim Nagy’s top-tier experience in scouting and recruitment will be invaluable for refining our roster and enhancing our on-field performance. I’m excited to collaborate with him and Athletics Director Castiglione as we chart a promising path for OU football.”
