Mirra Andreeva etched her name in the annals of tennis history as she snagged the prestigious WTA 1000 title at the Dubai Tennis Championships, becoming the youngest ever to do so at just 17.
Andreeva clinched victory over Clara Tauson with a 7-6 (7-1) 6-1 scoreline, indicating her upcoming debut in the world’s top 10 rankings next week. Her path to the final was anything but easy, having toppled Grand Slam champions like Marketa Vondrousova, Iga Swiatek, and Elena Rybakina along the way.
Reflecting on her achievement, Andreeva shared, “My goal was to break into the top 10 by year’s end. Achieving it by February feels surreal.”
Tauson, a formidable 22-year-old from Denmark, initially took the lead 2-0. However, Andreeva was quick to find her rhythm, leveling the score at 2-2. The first set was a tight affair, decided by a tiebreak where Andreeva captured the first six points before Tauson faltered with a long return.
In the second set, Andreeva asserted dominance, cruising to a 5-1 lead. Her triumph was sealed when Tauson’s return went long yet again, marking a sensational win for the young talent.
Andreeva beamed, “I’m thrilled with my performance, even with all the nerves and the double faults. Managing the pressure and coming out on top feels incredible.”
She continued, clearly overwhelmed with emotion, “This victory is a dream come true, leaving me absolutely speechless.”
