Despite chilling temperatures and a significant ice storm sweeping through Northern Michigan, the “official” golf season kicks off today, April 1. It seems that Mother Nature isn’t quite ready to let go of winter, but the golfing community is soldiering on.
The picture you see above was snapped by Mrs. GolfBlogger at our covert Northern base, conveniently close to the Mackinac Bridge. The storm was so intense that it even forced the iconic bridge to close. And yes, that adorable creature in the photo is the family corgi.
Now, a quick side note for those unfamiliar with Michigan pronunciation: Mackinac is pronounced “Mack-in-Awe,” no kidding! It’s one of those quirks you pick up when you move to Michigan — a whole new set of pronunciation rules.
As if the icy blast wasn’t enough, power outages have been reported throughout most of Northern Michigan. A friend who owns a golf course up there shared a map, illustrating just how widespread the outages are.
Even down here in southeast Michigan, the weather is stubbornly wintry, with no snow on the ground, but temperatures barely inching above freezing.
The idea of an “official” golf season is more ceremonial than practical. True fans, like our GolfBlogger, don’t let the calendar dictate their play—golf in Michigan can be a year-round affair. Officially, the USGA and the Golf Association of Michigan set April 1 as the starting date for players to start logging scores for handicaps, and the season runs through October 31.
But fear not, warmer days are just around the corner, promising the return of regular tee times across Michigan golf courses.
