When Mark Cuban decided to sell the Dallas Mavericks to the Adelson and Dumont families, he confidently told the media that he’d stay in charge of basketball operations indefinitely. Meanwhile, the Adelson family was set to focus on the Mavericks’ business side, aiming to legalize gambling in Texas and dreaming of a casino resort in Dallas. However, as Nico Harrison was granted more authority, Cuban’s grip seemed to loosen, especially noticeable during their playoff appearance.
Over time, Cuban’s involvement with the Mavericks waned to the point where he didn’t play a part in the trade involving Luka Doncic. As the dust settled on that pivotal decision, Cuban has become more vocal, clearly unhappy with how things unfolded.
“I really believed I’d be running basketball operations,” Cuban commented. “The NBA wouldn’t allow it to be part of the contract; they took that clause out,” he explained regarding his deal with the Adelsons. “I assumed they’d honor their word since they didn’t have a clue about managing a team. But it seems someone had a change of heart.”
