In a thrilling showdown at the Mexican Open, held in gorgeous Acapulco, eighth-seeded Tomas Machac triumphed over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with a decisive 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory on Saturday, marking his first ATP title win.
At just 24, Machac has claimed a place in history as the third Czech player to win an ATP 500 tournament since the tier’s inception in 2009. He now stands alongside Jiri Lehecka, who seized victories in Adelaide in 2024 and Brisbane in 2025, and Kiri Vesely, known for his wins in Auckland in 2015 and Pune in 2020.
This remarkable win catapults Machac into the top 20 of the men’s rankings, a notable achievement not seen by a Czech player since Tomas Berdych managed it back in June 2018.
Machac’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges; he previously fell short in the final against Casper Ruud in Geneva just last year. For Davidovich Fokina, this marks a tough period, as it is his second consecutive defeat in a final within a month, following a previous loss to Miomir Kecmanovic in Delray Beach this past February.
