Linebacker Lavonte David has made the decision to keep the Tampa Bay Buccaneers his home for another season, much to the delight of fans. He inked a one-year contract that could earn him up to $10 million, as shared by his representative, Ron Butler, with ESPN on Friday.
The contract ensures David receives $9 million guaranteed, a comforting financial cushion for the coming year. Although the end of the last season saw David unsure about his future, the Buccaneers patiently gave him the space needed to contemplate his next steps.
After careful consideration, David chose to rejoin the team for his 14th season, during which he’s served as a team captain for 11 years running. His steadfast leadership has been a cornerstone for the Buccaneers.
As the NFL free agency window opens, fans and analysts alike are keeping a close watch on every move. ESPN is providing in-depth coverage, offering a cheat sheet, top 100 free agents list, and analyses on various deals, seeing steals and reaches.
Embracing the decision on social media, David expressed his excitement and gratitude on Instagram: “I love the game too much to give it up just yet! The good Lord blessed me with another opportunity, so I figured I should take advantage of it! Tampa, I’m not done yet!” He further emphasized his enthusiasm in a message to ESPN, stating, “I’m excited to get back at it. More ball to be played.”
Reflecting on his journey, Butler recounted, “Lavonte and I talked a lot about the possibility of retiring or returning over the past few weeks. Both the club and I wanted him to take the time he needed to make the best decision for himself. His love for the game and the franchise is immense. He truly embodies what it means to be a consummate professional. It was vital for him to conclude his career where it all began.”
Upon confirming David’s return, Buccaneers’ general manager Jason Licht hailed him as “not only one of the greatest Buccaneers in history, but the embodiment of consistency, excellence, and leadership.” Licht continued, “For over a decade, Lavonte has been the heart of our defense, setting an example with his relentless work ethic and passion for football. His influence extends far beyond the field, and we are thrilled to have him for another season.”
Last year, David stood out as the sole NFL player to notch at least 100 tackles, 5.0 sacks, and over 3 forced fumbles. His 1,111 solo tackles rank highest among active players since 2012.
David, now 35, has shown remarkable endurance throughout his career, amassing 208 starts including playoffs, which places him fourth among all league players since 2012 and second among linebackers, just behind Bobby Wagner.
In the annals of NFL statistics, David is one of four players since tracking began in 1994 to achieve at least 1,500 combined tackles, 35 sacks, and 10 interceptions, joining the ranks of London Fletcher, Ray Lewis, and Wagner.
David’s record of 20 fumble recoveries tops the chart for all players since 2012, while his 31 forced fumbles are the third most. His 70 passes defended rank second for active linebackers since 2012. With nine 100-plus-tackle seasons, he leads the league since 2009, and his 169 tackles for loss hold the top spot for off-the-ball linebackers since 2012.
