WBO lightweight champion Keyshawn Davis feels that Lamont Roach has “earned” a shot to challenge him and the other top contenders in the 135-pound category after battling to a 12-round majority draw against WBA titleholder Gervonta Davis on March 1st.
It’s notable that Roach has held a world champion title longer than Keyshawn, and it would make more sense for Roach to be talking boldly. Keyshawn exhibits classic narcissistic traits, boasting as though he’s held the world champion status for years, when in fact, he only recently secured his WBO belt by defeating perhaps the weakest link, Denys Berinchyk, just last month on February 14th.
### Keyshawn Overreaching?
Lamont Roach, boasting a record of 25-1-2 with 10 knockouts, has moved from relative obscurity to being a sought-after opponent in the lightweight division, particularly after making a formidable fighter like Tank Davis appear ordinary. Roach’s real desire is to secure a lucrative rematch with Gervonta, rather than a financially lesser bout against Keyshawn. That would be quite a step down.
“He definitely fought his way into a position to fight me. You put in the work, you earned the right to be in the ring with these world champs. I’d love to fight Lamont [Roach],” remarked Keyshawn Davis on Shawn Porter’s YouTube channel, expressing his enthusiasm for defending his WBO lightweight title against Lamont Roach.
You have to wonder, why does Davis perceive himself as some kind of royalty in the division? Is Top Rank boosting his ego, making him believe he’s a cut above the rest? Looking at the opponents Keyshawn has faced, it becomes clear that he hasn’t really beaten anyone of high stature to justify his attitude as a top player in the lightweight division. In reality, he seems more like a placeholder champion.
### Davis’s Recent Opponents:
– Denys Berinchyk
– Gustavo Lemos
– Miguel Madueno
– Jose Pedraza
– Nahir Albright
– Francesco Patera
– Anthony Yigit
Considering the drama at the final press conference before his fight with Berinchyk, where Keyshawn launched into accusations of racism, claiming Berinchyk had sent a box of bananas to his room, Roach might find it unworthy of his time to engage in this spectacle. It all seemed orchestrated to spark controversy and drum up interest in Keyshawn’s fight.
Furthermore, it was quite offensive to see Berinchyk being labeled a racist without any substantive proof. Keyshawn’s actions painted Berinchyk as a racist, which was truly unfair.
