Following a somewhat underwhelming 7-10 record in the 2024 season, the Dallas Cowboys decided to part ways with Mike McCarthy, ending his five-year stint as head coach. In a strategic move to turn the tables, they brought in seasoned NFL offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, to take the helm and steer the team towards a brighter future.
As free agency unfolded this offseason, the Cowboys bid farewell to backup quarterback Cooper Rush, who took his talents to the Baltimore Ravens. Seeking a worthy successor to support Dak Prescott, Dallas orchestrated a trade with the New England Patriots ahead of the impending NFL draft. The deal saw quarterback Joe Milton, along with a seventh-round pick, heading to Dallas in exchange for a fifth-round pick.
Joe Milton, a new addition to the Cowboys roster, steps into the role of backup QB. According to a scoop shared on Twitter by Dianna Russini, multiple teams expressed interest in Milton’s potential, but it was Dallas that successfully secured his services.
The Patriots drafted Joe Milton in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL draft. Before his entry into the NFL, Milton honed his skills at the University of Michigan, where he started his college career in 2018. Following three seasons with the Wolverines, he transferred to Tennessee, where he enjoyed a standout year in 2023. That season, Milton recorded an impressive 12 starts, amassing 2,813 passing yards, delivering 20 touchdowns, and throwing just five interceptions. His versatility was evident as he also rushed 78 times for 299 yards, crossing the goal line seven times.
During his rookie year with the Patriots in 2024, Milton’s appearances were limited, finding himself in a competitive environment where New England had also acquired two other quarterbacks, including the heralded Drake Maye from UNC as the third overall pick. Maye firmly held the starting spot, which left Milton observing from the sidelines.
With the Cowboys acquiring Joe Milton this offseason, they aim to harness his renowned arm strength, which is said to launch footballs over 70 yards, with whispers of his capability reaching over 80 yards at times. As Cooper Rush departs, the Cowboys look at Milton as the up-and-coming backup, hoping he can absorb valuable insights from Dak Prescott while waiting for his moment to shine. In his sole outing in Week 18 of the 2024 season, Milton impressed, completing 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown, hinting at the promise he brings to Dallas.
