Natasha Jonas’ coach, Joe Gallagher, expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the weigh-in scale prior to her upcoming bout with Lauren Price. According to Gallagher, the scale wasn’t correctly calibrated, casting doubt on the official weights. However, he acknowledges that despite the issue, it’s unlikely anyone will take action to fix it.
At this high-profile venue with such an important event on the line—a unification fight between world champions—Gallagher emphasized the expectation of having properly calibrated scales for both the weigh-in and the fight itself. Unfortunately, the scales didn’t meet those expectations.
Gallagher pointed out the calibration sticker on the scale, dated January 9, with the fight taking place in March. He insists that once scales are relocated, as from a hotel to a venue, they are no longer calibrated accurately. The sticker remains unchanged since January, which is a significant concern for him.
He mentioned that everyone who stepped on the scales noticed they seemed lighter than they should be. While Natasha made weight, coming in two pounds under, the principle at stake is using properly calibrated equipment during such a prestigious event.
Gallagher anticipates some might see him as overreacting, but he argues that at the level of world title fights, this is a serious issue. He questions how such an oversight would be received in a hypothetical Pacquiao vs. Mayweather scenario, or in a match featuring other top fighters like Claressa Shields in the U.S.
He adds that the boxing board might claim satisfaction with the situation, though he cautions that expressing his concerns could risk a fine. Ultimately, Gallagher insists on adhering to the rules, yet notes the lack of a current calibration sticker casts doubt on the legitimacy of the weigh-in, which technically invalidates the world title aspect of this fight. Despite this, he expects his protest will be overridden by broadcasters and the boxing board.
