Jodie Burrage’s journey at the ATX Open in Austin, Texas came to an end as she faced defeat against Ajla Tomljanovic in the round of 16. The British player, who had impressively knocked out Petra Kvitova in the earlier round, began the match with vigor but eventually succumbed to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 loss to her Australian opponent.
Despite her lower ranking of 189 compared to Tomljanovic’s 111 in the world, Burrage managed to seize the first set by breaking Tomljanovic in a pivotal seventh game. Burrage, 25, had leveraged a powerful serve to outplay Kvitova, blasting 14 aces past her. She continued that momentum by delivering six aces in the initial set against Tomljanovic.
The tide began to turn in the second set, however. Burrage stumbled in the fourth game, with a double fault putting her in a 3-1 deficit. Although she fought determinedly to reclaim the break, Tomljanovic, at 31, maintained her composure and successfully served out the set.
The final set was a stark contrast to Burrage’s strong start, as she couldn’t manage to win a single game, visibly frustrated by the end.
