INDIANAPOLIS – While the Jets are clearly ready to part ways with Aaron Rodgers, the future of Davante Adams with the team remains up in the air. General manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn have admitted Adams is still technically with the team but haven’t outlined a definitive plan for his future.
“We have him on the roster at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “We need to keep having discussions about what direction we’ll take. Our focus is always on retaining talented players, so let’s see where that leads us.”
Adams’s hefty $38.3 million cap hit for 2025 presents a challenge, suggesting a potential release could be on the horizon. Alternatively, the Jets might explore trade options to ease the cap situation before cutting ties.
When questioned about whether Adams and his agent have been given the green light to talk to other teams, Mougey opted for discretion, not divulging any specifics.
“Currently, Davante is part of the team,” Mougey stated. “We’ve made plans regarding his situation, and over the next few weeks, we’ll have more clarity. But right now, he’s a Jet.”
If the Jets are serious about keeping Adams, they might need to broker a fresh deal for 2025. However, with Rodgers likely leaving, Adams might not be so keen on staying put.
Mougey was also quizzed on possible contract extensions for Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner, the standout first-round picks from 2022, as they enter their fourth NFL season and become eligible for contract talks.
“I’m really thrilled to have these two phenomenal young players on our roster,” Mougey shared. “Both Garrett and Sauce bring incredible talent, and we’re fortunate to have them in our lineup.”
During the discussion, Mougey wouldn’t confirm if securing deals with Wilson and Gardner is a priority at this stage, yet he emphasized the importance of nurturing young talent and strengthening the team.
“The main task is to ensure we retain promising young players while continuously bringing in quality talent,” Mougey explained.
As the draft approaches, Mougey left the options wide open for the No. 7 overall pick, indicating that the team’s strategy remains flexible to adapt to the best opportunities available.
