Jasmine Paolini is making waves at the Miami Open, reaching the semifinals for the very first time. Competing in Miami Gardens, Florida, the sixth seed Paolini secured her spot with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory over Poland’s Magda Linette, who came into the tournament unseeded. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as Paolini is the first woman to advance to the tournament’s final four this year.
In a historic turn, Paolini also becomes the first Italian woman to reach the Miami semifinals. Historically, Italian women have seen success in the quarterfinals six times, with the most recent being Martina Trevisan in 2023.
Looking ahead, Paolini is set to battle either the top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka or ninth-seeded Qinwen Zheng from China in the semifinals. Their quarterfinal clash was originally planned for later on Tuesday, although rain resulted in several delays throughout the day.
The excitement continues on the other side of the women’s draw, with Wednesday’s quarterfinal action featuring the U.S.’s own Jessica Pegula, who is seeded fourth, against Emma Radacanu from Britain. Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek, who holds the second seed, faces off against the Philippines’ rising star, Alexandra Eala.
