Some might view Cam Ward’s cool demeanor as a potential drawback, but according to a Miami Hurricanes legend, it’s precisely what’s needed in a quarterback.
Jonathan Vilma, a key player in Miami’s 2001 college football championship, believes Ward’s easygoing nature on the field indicates that he’s always analyzing the game.
“The first thing I noticed, which initially caught many off guard, was just how composed he was,” Vilma commented. Known for his successful career as a linebacker with the Jets and Saints, Vilma added, “People thought, wow, nothing seems to shake him. I absolutely love those kinds of quarterbacks. You want someone who, even if they’re not showing much emotion, is actually deep in thought. If he’s composed and collected, he’s unshakeable. That’s why I admire his attitude. His mental framework is spot on.”
Ward is a top contender for the No. 1 overall draft pick, with the Titans currently holding that position and keeping a keen eye on him.
Teams like the Browns at No. 2 and the New York Giants at No. 3 are also in the market for a promising young quarterback to rejuvenate their squads.
Ward had a phenomenal season with Miami, but the draft predominantly focuses on potential.
Quarterbacks in the NFL need lightning-fast decision-making abilities. While Vilma acknowledges there will be an adjustment period for Ward, he has faith in Ward’s ability to rise to the occasion and shine at the next level.
“Like all rookies, he’ll need to quicken his mental processing once he hits the NFL,” Vilma explained. “The best part is, he never seemed fazed by anything. If he can maintain that composure, he’ll thrive in the NFL. He’s got the arm strength, the mobility; it’s about staying level-headed, mastering defenses, and speeding up his processing—something I’m confident he’ll excel at.”
