Aaron Rodgers might still have a future in New York, but perhaps with the Giants instead of the Jets. Although Matthew Stafford has signed on to stay with the Rams, closing that quarterback opportunity, Rodgers has emerged as a serious contender for the Giants, according to insights from The Post’s Paul Schwartz. The major hurdle, it seems, would be how the team feels about his off-the-field antics.
At 41, Rodgers was given the news this offseason that the Jets wouldn’t be keeping him on the roster. Now he’s left contemplating his next steps for the upcoming 2025 season. Even in what could be described as a lackluster final year with the Jets, the future Hall of Famer managed to rack up an impressive 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns.
However, Rodgers’ activities away from football didn’t sit well with the Jets’ management or their fans during his two-year run with the team. He’s been a lightning rod for controversy, particularly for his candid remarks on “The Pat McAfee Show,” his decision to skip mandatory training camp while vacationing in Egypt, and even being mentioned by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as a potential vice presidential candidate.
And that’s just a glimpse of the drama that has accompanied his career. Nonetheless, the Giants are far from deterred, and his name was buzzing at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
If Rodgers were to cross the threshold to the Giants’ side of MetLife Stadium, it would mean either negotiating a trade with their stadium rivals or waiting for the free agency window to open on March 10.
When it comes to quarterback options for next season, the Giants don’t have a lot to choose from. There’s Rodgers and Kirk Cousins of the Falcons, each with a limited number of high-performance years left in them. The draft might offer hope, though even the top QB prospects like Cam Ward and Shedder Sanders bring their own question marks.
Giants General Manager Joe Schoen seems committed to exploring all avenues, knowing full well that his career might very well depend on it. This might involve giving Rodgers a serious look.
“I’m all about taking chances when it comes to that position,” Schoen remarked on Tuesday morning. “It’s the most crucial spot, and finding the right player is a challenge, so we have to keep trying. Keep trying until we land the right one.”
