George Foreman, one of boxing’s legendary heavyweights, has bid farewell to the world, leaving a legacy as enduring as the grills bearing his name. His estate shared on social media, “With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. on March 21, 2025, surrounded by family. A man of deep faith, a dedicated husband, devoted father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, George lived a life defined by unwavering conviction and humility.”
Foreman’s journey was nothing short of remarkable, transforming from a formidable fighter into one of America’s treasured cultural icons. The statement continued, “A humanitarian, Olympian, and two-time heavyweight champion of the world, his respect stretched far and wide—he was a bastion of morality, dedication, and a relentless guardian of his legacy for his loved ones.”
After capturing a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics, Foreman emerged as a powerhouse in the heavyweight arena. By 1973, he was ready to claim the heavyweight title, utterly dismantling defending champion Joe Frazier with six knockdowns in just two rounds. Yet, in a twist of fate, Muhammad Ali reclaimed the spotlight in 1974 by defeating Foreman in Zaire, a moment that went down in history.
Astonishingly, Foreman would recapture the heavyweight crown two decades later under unexpected circumstances. A profound religious experience reignited his passion, propelling him to return to boxing in 1987, primarily to support his ministry. Though initially met with skepticism—given his altered physique, marked by age and weight gain—Foreman silenced doubters by defeating Michael Moorer in 1994, resurrecting his champion status some 20 years after facing Ali.
Foreman fought on until 1997, but by then, he’d become more renowned for his endeavors outside the ring, notably as the face of the George Foreman Grill. The success of these grills catapulted his financial standing, reportedly surpassing that of even Michael Jordan. His passing casts a long shadow over boxing, a narrative imbued with positivity and triumph never to be duplicated. “We appreciate the heartfelt condolences and request privacy as we honor the extraordinary life of a man who blessed our lives,” his estate concluded.
