Liverpool supporters are still trying to shake off the shock from an unexpected loss to Fulham, and Virgil van Dijk has opened up about his perspective on the match.
Speaking after the disappointing game, van Dijk shared his candid thoughts, noting, “As a team, that wasn’t up to our standards.”
He continued, “It was just a bad day for us all around. There were moments we should have handled better on an individual level.”
He acknowledged that such moments can pop up in matches, but allowing Fulham to score three times left Liverpool playing catch-up, an uphill struggle they failed to overturn.
“We’re all human and bound to make mistakes, but when those mistakes came, we were punished harshly, making it a challenging game to recover from,” he added.
Despite the setback, van Dijk pointed out that the belief in the team remained strong. They still had their chances, but the outcome of the first half was undeniable.
“We realize as players that there’s still much to play for,” he mentioned. “Seven games to go, and next up is West Ham. We’ve got to give it everything at home, players and fans together, to secure those three points.”
With plenty of training ahead, van Dijk remarked that while they’re in a good position, games like this remind them that the task is far from over. He emphasized, “That’s our group mentality – the job isn’t finished.”
From his words, it’s evident our number 4 wasn’t satisfied with his play against Fulham, nor was he pleased with the team’s overall performance that Sunday afternoon.
Liverpool legend John Aldridge went so far as to describe the display as ‘abysmal,’ echoing van Dijk’s frustration.
Meanwhile, Arne Slot pointed out the critical mistakes that cost Liverpool any points from their trip to London, although he acknowledged that not everything was negative.
Fulham managed just three shots on target, so it wasn’t a runaway victory, but Marco Silva’s squad took the chances they got and clinched the win.
Looking ahead to Sunday’s match against West Ham, van Dijk stressed the importance of everyone – players and fans alike – bringing their best efforts to get back on track.
