The competition at the Miami Open was shaping up to be promising for Ben Shelton, but then Coleman Wong, a 20-year-old, stepped onto the scene and changed everything.
Ranked 182nd globally, the tennis player from Hong Kong pulled off an impressive upset against the 13th seed, Shelton. Wong clinched the victory by seizing his third match point during a nail-biting tiebreaker in the deciding set, marking himself as the lowest-ranked player to advance to the round of 32 in Miami in a decade.
“I’m always confident playing on big stages,” Wong revealed in his post-match interview, brimming with emotion. Reflecting on past challenges, he added, “COVID was tough—I didn’t play for a year and a half, but my team was there for me every step of the way. This moment is for you, Hong Kong.”
Earlier in the tournament, Wong had made history by becoming the first player from Hong Kong to secure a win at a Masters 1000 event, after defeating Daniel Altmaier in the opening round. His next challenge is against Lucky Loser, Adam Walton.
Throughout the match against Shelton, Wong showcased aggressive and determined play. He surged ahead to a 5-2 lead in the third set, only for Shelton to mount a comeback, leveling the playing field by breaking Wong’s serve.
As tensions peaked with Wong holding two match points while Shelton served at 5-6, the American dazzled the crowd with bold winners to stave off defeat. However, in the tiebreaker, Wong capitalized on his third match point, scoring a remarkable win.
