Throughout the 2024 football season, former Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers was dealing with a surprising level of adversity. What initially seemed like a minor issue turned out to be far more serious.
According to a report by Tom Pelissero from NFL Network, Ewers was playing with a torn oblique throughout the entire season, a revelation that came to light during the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. Initially, it was believed outside of the Texas Longhorns’ inner circle that Ewers had only strained his oblique, an injury supposedly sustained in the Week 3 clash with UTSA.
Pelissero further revealed a twist in the timeline, noting that Ewers actually sustained the injury during Texas’ second matchup of the year, facing off against Michigan. Despite this, he started in the subsequent game against UTSA but had to leave early after aggravating the injury. This led to Arch Manning stepping in and getting significant playtime for the remainder of the UTSA game and the following week’s game against Mississippi State.
Interestingly, Ewers is now reportedly in top shape after several months of recuperation following Texas’ College Football Playoff journey, which concluded in a semifinal defeat to Ohio State. The quarterback is set to participate in throwing sessions at the NFL Combine, even as some of his peers decide to sit out the on-field exercises in Indianapolis.
Moreover, Pelissero mentioned that Ewers has been undergoing training in Dallas, working closely with former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy in preparation for the NFL Combine, which runs from February 27 to March 3.
Standing at 6-foot-2, Ewers delivered an impressive performance last season, completing 293 of 445 pass attempts, which translates to a 65.8% completion rate. He managed to throw for a total of 3,472 yards, along with 31 touchdowns against 12 interceptions, all while contending with his injury. During Texas’ three College Football Playoff matches, Ewers threw for a combined total of 807 yards, adding six touchdowns and three interceptions to his stats against teams like Clemson, Arizona State, and Ohio State.
Once touted as a top recruit, ranking as the No. 1 player in the nation for the 2021 recruiting class by 247Sports’ Composite rankings, Ewers is likely to be the third quarterback taken in this year’s NFL draft. He’s expected to follow behind potential top 10 draftees Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders.
