Stefano Domenicali is set to continue steering the helm of Formula 1, as CEO, right through to the end of 2029. This follows his five-year contract extension with the sport’s owner, Liberty Media.
Domenicali, who stepped in as CEO in 2021 after Chase Carey, has had a notable impact on the sport’s growth. As the former team principal of Ferrari and a VP at Audi, he’s brought a wealth of experience with him. Liberty Media announced this extension, highlighting the sport’s thriving ecosystem under his leadership. Derek Chang, Liberty’s new president and CEO, expressed how Domenicali has been pivotal in ensuring F1 remains a dynamic and progressive business.
Chang shared, “We’re absolutely delighted to have Stefano with us for the years to come. His impressive track record shows in the sport’s development, both in terms of commercial success and growing the fan base. Stefano’s passion and enthusiasm have fueled strategic initiatives that truly deliver.”
He further lauded Domenicali’s partnership, saying that Liberty Media remains forward-looking and optimistic about the direction in which F1 is heading. There’s a sense of excitement about what’s next for the sport, its followers, partners, and stakeholders.
A key aspect of Domenicali’s tenure has been securing strong sponsorships, such as a recent major deal with LVMH. More notably, he’s navigated tricky waters with the debated inclusion of a new team led by Cadillac, slated to join the grid by 2026.
At 59, Domenicali isn’t slowing down. His vision for the future remains firmly focused on enhancing the fan experience and attracting a broader audience to the sport.
Reflecting on his journey, Domenicali remarked, “Leading this sport, which has been intertwined with my life since my youth, is truly an honor. I am grateful to Liberty Media for their trust. Together, alongside all the relevant stakeholders, we are committed to keeping the interests of our fans at the forefront. Their passion, energy, and excitement drive me to give my all to Formula 1 every single day.”
