Russian tennis player Daria Kasatkina is making a major life change by adopting Australia as her new home. At 27, Kasatkina has been critical of Russia’s LGBTQ+ policies and outspoken against the conflict in Ukraine. Having been based in Dubai and not stepped foot in Russia for over two years, she recently received permanent residency in Australia and plans to represent the country in her athletic career.
There was some recent confusion when a Spanish flag appeared next to her name at a WTA Tour draw, but she quickly laid to rest any misconceptions about a nationality switch to Spain. The world number 12 expressed her affection for Australia on social media, sharing that the country feels extraordinarily welcoming and like a real home to her. “Melbourne is a city I adore,” she said, “and I eagerly anticipate settling down there.”
Acknowledging the emotional complexity of her decision, Kasatkina conveyed her heartfelt thanks to her family, coaches, and supporters who have been with her throughout her journey. She initially shared her identity as gay in a 2022 video interview, highlighting Russia’s oppressive LGBTQ+ stance as a motivator for her departure. Additionally, her vocal criticism of the Ukraine war led to a call from a Russian politician to label her a ‘foreign agent,’ though the effort failed.
In her statement on Friday, Kasatkina affirmed, “While I hold my origins in high regard, the opportunity to embark on this exciting new chapter in Australia fills me with joy. Your understanding and ongoing support mean the world to me.”
