It’s not uncommon for renowned boxers to attempt a comeback after hanging up their gloves. The late George Foreman once showed that time could be defied, though it’s generally accepted that returning to the ring often doesn’t end well for fighters. Bob Arum, the legendary promoter with decades of experience, knows this all too well. That’s why he might suggest that Tyson Fury, a former world heavyweight champion who fought under Arum’s Top Rank Promotions, should heed his advice.
In a recent conversation with Sky Sports, Arum shared his thoughts on Fury’s career. “I think Tyson Fury owes it to himself and his family to stay happily retired,” he noted. It’s an interesting perspective coming from someone who, together with Fury’s other promoter Frank Warren, stands to gain financially if Fury makes a return to boxing. Arum continued, “He has plenty ahead of him. He’s a natural communicator and entertainer, but I feel he’s had his fill of fighting.”
Arum seems convinced that Fury has made enough money from his career to leave the ring life behind. He pointed out that Fury’s earnings in recent years should set him and his family up for life. “I would advise him never to get back in the ring but to use his talents as a spokesman. He communicates exceptionally well,” Arum suggested. But what about the fans, especially those from England, who are yearning for a showdown between Fury and fellow Brit, Anthony Joshua?
“As you know,” Arum explained, “I’m not British, so the prospect of an Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury bout doesn’t captivate me as much as it might a Brit. It doesn’t bother me that he’s choosing to walk away from boxing and that particular fight.” Yet, Arum conceded that only Fury knows what he’ll choose to do next. “Tyson is a very extroverted person,” he acknowledged. “He communicates and shares his thoughts freely. But honestly, I can’t say for sure what he’s ultimately going to decide because I don’t even think he’s certain.” It’s challenging to predict Fury’s next move—his unpredictability is undoubtedly one of his defining characteristics.
