Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of Formula 1, recently sat down with Thailand’s Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, to discuss a thrilling prospect—the idea of hosting a street-circuit grand prix in the bustling capital of Bangkok.
Prime Minister Shinawatra revealed that the government is planning to initiate a “feasibility study” to explore the potential for staging a race in Bangkok, aiming for a possible start date of 2028. This move hints at Thailand’s growing interest in embracing the high-speed world of Formula 1 racing.
Currently, Thailand already boasts a track in Buriram, located in the north-east of the country, which holds accreditation from the FIA, the global motorsport governing body. So, the foundation for motorsport is already in place.
Domenicali was quite taken by the proposal, describing it as nothing short of “impressive.” Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shinawatra expressed optimism about the benefits this event could bring to Thailand. She highlighted the potential for massive infrastructure investments, job creation, fresh revenue streams, and the introduction of new technologies and innovations that such an event would bring.
As of now, the Formula 1 calendar features 24 races, with four of those taking place in the Asia-Pacific region. Adding Bangkok to that list could make for an exciting new chapter in the F1 story.
