Mo Salah’s current form is nothing short of phenomenal, and it certainly creates a daunting prospect for anyone lined up to take over his role. This is especially true if that candidate is Antony.
The Brazilian winger, in a chat with Estadio Deportivo, reminisced about his near-move to Liverpool during the summer of 2022. He remarked, “Indeed, I was on the brink of signing with Liverpool, but who knows what could have unfolded.”
Ultimately, Antony found himself at Manchester United, sharing that, “I experienced some wonderful moments there, and it turned out to be a good decision too.”
Reflecting on Salah, Antony added, “He’s been performing incredible feats for quite a while now. Truly, Salah is an exceptional talent. Whether he’s the best in the world right now is up for debate, but he’s undoubtedly among the elite and a serious Ballon d’Or contender.”
Looking back, it’s clear that Liverpool made the right call in renewing the contract of their iconic star instead of bringing in Antony during that transfer window.
During his tenure at Manchester United, Antony struggled to make a significant impact. Now on loan at Real Betis, he has continued to reveal a streak of unpredictability. Arne Slot, who has seen Antony’s behavior up close during their encounters in the Eredivisie, might find some truth in the past laughs shared between them.
This isn’t the first revelation about the club’s close call with transferring Salah out for someone who didn’t quite leave a mark at Manchester United, but it certainly reinforces the point.
Fans can breathe a sigh of relief that Salah stayed put at Anfield. Hopefully, Richard Hughes will ensure Salah’s story at Liverpool continues with another contract renewal.
