This season has truly been rough for the Philadelphia 76ers, but it’s almost at an end, thankfully.
The team has struggled with numerous injuries, affecting even their top players. Just recently, Shams Charania shared some disheartening news on Thursday morning: Tyrese Maxey is likely done for the season due to a finger tendon injury.
Maxey hasn’t seen any action since March 3, as he’s been trying to recover from his finger issue. Unfortunately, he’s still experiencing discomfort and will need further treatment.
While the 76ers’ hopes for a successful postseason had already faded, losing Maxey adds to the pain.
The 24-year-old guard has been impressive this season, averaging 26.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 6.1 assists, with a shooting percentage of 43.7 from the field.
After claiming the Most Improved Player award last season, Maxey stepped up into an even bigger role for his team this year.
The season kicked off on a tough note, with both Joel Embiid and Paul George dealing with injuries before they’d even played a game together.
The situation didn’t improve much as the season unfolded. Embiid faced injuries throughout, and George also had to sit out frequently.
On another front, rookie prospect Jared McCain was sidelined in December following his own injury.
The Sixers entered this season with high hopes of being a leading team in the East, and their offseason moves showed a lot of promise.
However, the relentless wave of injuries derailed those aspirations.
Currently ranked 13th in the East with a 23-53 record, the playoffs are no longer a possibility.
While this season might be a write-off, fans remain optimistic that next year could see a turnaround if Embiid, George, McCain, Maxey, and the rest of the squad manage to stay healthy.
