The introduction of new training modules by the FIA University is set to enhance the skills and experience of medical staff, drivers, and volunteers across the world of motorsport.
The enduring commitment of the FIA to prioritize safety and wellbeing in motorsport naturally leads to significant educational initiatives. Through the expansive resources of the FIA University, five sporty Motorsport Medicine eLearning Modules have been introduced. These modules are aimed at enriching the medical knowledge applicable to the motorsport community globally.
These courses are designed with precision, each one tailored to cater to different specialties, offering a well-rounded understanding of best practices before, during, and after races. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the FIA University, the FIA Medical Commission, and is generously supported by the FIA Foundation.
Here’s a sneak peek at what each module offers:
The Driver’s Handbook: Racing drivers, being athletes, need to uphold top physical and mental conditioning. This module zeroes in on fitness routines, medical assessments, and careful preparation to navigate both events and unexpected challenges like accidents.
Understanding Concussion: Ensuring safety involves education on concussions. This module teaches how to identify concussion symptoms, apply correct protocols, and manage safe integrations back into competition.
Duties of the Healthcare Professional: This one is crafted for clinical staff at various levels, laying out safe and efficient working norms within a motorsport setting. It spans preparation, responsibilities while an event is underway, and post-event tasks.
Duties of the Chief Medical Officer: Aimed at both current and aspiring Chief Medical Officers, this module offers a roadmap for effectively leading medical operations during events. It outlines roles, preparatory steps, and leadership of medical teams for a seamless operation from start to finish.
Principles of Pre-Hospital Care: Whether you’re new to pre-hospital care or already practicing, this module is for you. It covers trauma assessments, emergency management, and equips you with essential procedures for handling pre-hospital medical situations.
These modules are quick and comprehensive, requiring just 30 to 45 minutes each and are accessible through the FIA University website. Upon completion, participants are better prepared to deal with various medical situations that arise in motorsport, contributing to a much safer racing world.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem warmly welcomed these modules, emphasizing the importance of safe environments in sports and the critical role educational resources play in bolstering the global motorsport medical framework. By providing top-notch medical training, FIA is empowering professionals with vital skills to enhance safety on the track and beyond.
Echoing the president’s sentiments, Dr. Sean Petherbridge, FIA Medical Commission President, highlighted the importance of this initiative in catering to the growing demands of the sport for trained medical personnel. He noted that the wide-ranging benefits of these eLearning modules extend from newcomers to seasoned professionals, aiding drivers to collaborate effectively with medical teams.
