The life of an NFL player is fraught with unpredictability, often leading to earlier retirements than one might expect. Many players dream of extending their careers well into their 30s, but the relentless physical and mental demands of pro football often tell a different story.
One such story is that of Keanu Neal, a former Pro Bowl safety who recently hung up his cleats after a seven-year tenure in the NFL. Sharing the news on Instagram, the 29-year-old reflected on a journey filled with highs and lows that perfectly encapsulate the unpredictable nature of a football career.
“Veteran S/LB Keanu Neal, a former first-round pick of the #Falcons, is retiring from the NFL at the age of 29,” Ari Meirov from The 33rd Team announced on social media.
Drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 2016, Neal quickly carved out a crucial role for himself on the defense. Right out of the gate, he made a significant impact—racking up over 100 tackles in each of his first two seasons and earning a Pro Bowl spot in 2017. His defensive skills were key during the Falcons’ Super Bowl push, as he collected a remarkable 30 tackles in the playoffs.
Yet, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Neal’s career hit a rough patch with two injury-riddled seasons that saw him on the field for just four games. Even after regaining full health in his final year with the Falcons, substantial offers in free agency did not materialize.
In 2021, Neal shifted gears by joining the Dallas Cowboys, where he briefly took on the role of middle linebacker. He later transitioned again, this time to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022.
Neal’s final act unfolded with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he was signed on a two-year deal. He quickly became an important fixture in their secondary, starting eight games and notching 50 tackles and an interception. A rib injury, however, put a damper on his season, leading to his release in March.
After spending 2024 as a free agent with no successful bids, Neal ultimately decided to retire, closing the chapter on his memorable NFL career.
