After two dazzling NBA championship wins, J.R. Smith has embarked on a new journey that’s nothing short of surprising. This basketball star has swapped arenas to take on college golf, earning quite the reputation not just on the green but as a savvy brand ambassador.
GOLF: You got into golf as an adult and quickly became an enthusiast. What drew you in so deeply?
J.R. Smith: Golf offers this perfect blend of being challenging and laid-back at the same time. It tests you physically and mentally, yet there’s this tranquil aspect, especially when you’re out there with friends. Every day brings a new round; no two are the same, and that constant freshness is captivating. The sport’s evolving vibe is unbeatable—you’re out with buddies, basking in the sun, hitting shots, and genuinely living in the moment. Unlike basketball, it has a different energy, but it’s just as competitive, which is exactly what got me hooked.
G: Currently, what are the highlights and pitfalls of your game?
JS: I’d say my iron play is pretty solid right now. On the flip side, my driver is giving me the most trouble these days.
G: Who or what is your go-to for swing advice?
JS: I lean on my swing coach, Jason Baile, who’s one of the Top 100 Teachers based at Jupiter Hills.
G: What piece of golf advice has made the biggest difference for you?
JS: The greatest advice I’ve received is to remain patient. Golf’s one of those sports that slaps you back to reality if you start rushing things. Trust your swing, keep it simple, and let the game unfold naturally. At its core, sports should also be about having a good time, right?
G: Which NBA players are your favorite golf partners?
JS: I love hitting the green with Steph Curry, Chris Paul, and Kyle Korver.
Reflecting on a notable memory, Smith recalls playing alongside Rory McIlroy. G: Who’s the best golfer you’ve ever played with, and what left you impressed?
JS: Rory McIlroy for sure. His combination of distance and accuracy is simply awe-inspiring.
G: What do you think is the best way to ease the atmosphere with new folks on the course?
JS: Make sure to keep things light-hearted. Golf can be daunting, but once the first tee is behind you, it’s really just about having fun.
Teaming up with the drink company High Noon, Smith knows his course refreshment well. G: What’s your go-to drink while on the course?
JS: No contest—it has to be Peach High Noon Vodka Iced Tea. When the sun’s shining and you’re sinking some nice shots, a High Noon makes it all the more enjoyable.
Away from the NBA spotlight, Smith took on a new chapter by enrolling at North Carolina A&T—a collegiate golfer at 36 and now in his senior year. G: As you wrap up your time there, what will you miss most about college golf?
Smith has embraced this unexpected path, finding a passion that’s as intricate and exciting as any playoff game.
