So, right, Shakur Stevenson is defending his lightweight title against this dude, William Zepeda. It’s happening on July 12th in NYC. Good ol’ Big Apple. And Ring Magazine is involved, which, I guess, is a big deal in boxing circles. Honestly, who keeps track of these things unless it hits the news?
Anyway, there was this hullabaloo about Shakur’s apology to Turki Alalshikh. People were gossiping all over. It’s like, why are you apologizing, mate? But, aha! It turns out, he needed to settle things since it’s his card on July 12th. I wouldn’t want to burn any bridges either if I had such a gig lined up. Smart move.
So, Stevenson, who’s what now, 27, and has this whole undefeated streak going, has been barking up the fight tree for Zepeda. Apparently for a year now. Patience, much? But there’s a pot of gold — a Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis fight — waiting on the horizon if he plays his cards right. And if Turki is financing the Zepeda fight, well, there’s a hefty loot at stake.
Yet, there’s a catch. Winning isn’t a guarantee, nor is Tank saying, “Yep, let’s fight next.” And why wouldn’t Tank be hesitant? Remember back when Shakur and Edwin De Los Santos were doing their little tango around the ring? Yeah, two years ago. That did not scream, “Hey, throw your money at me!” Money talks though, maybe enough for Tank to take the bait, should Shakur triumph against Zepeda.
Now, about this Zepeda character. So, Shakur is all confident and chest outward, but I got to say, remember the time he lost to Robeisy Ramirez in the 2016 Olympics? Shockers! Yeah, that happened. Zepeda, I hear, packs a solid punch but doesn’t clock the same speed as Robeisy. If he manages to play a corner-and-pounce game, maybe, just maybe, he could pull an upset. But hey, what do I know?
And Shakur, well, his punch might not be the ‘Kaboom!’ type either. Seen it when he tangoed around with Josh Padley. Not exactly a power display.
Ah, boxing. It’s not just a game of fists, but a game of mind games, patience, and oh, a bursting pile of money. So, mark the date, if it interests you, and let’s see who gets the last punchline at the end of this boxing drama.
