Gervonta Davis has expressed his interest in a potential showdown with Devin Haney, regardless of the outcome from his rematch with Ryan Garcia. Davis seems keen on seeing Haney, the undefeated former two-division champ with a record of 31 wins and 15 knockouts, prove himself once more by giving a solid performance in his follow-up bout against Ryan.
Before crossing paths with Garcia again, Haney is set to have a warm-up bout against Jose Ramirez on May 2nd on the card featuring Ryan and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero in New York City. It’s possible that Davis is overlooking the clash with Ramirez in Haney’s busy schedule before the anticipated rematch with Kingry.
A question arises: Will Tank Davis still find a fight with Haney appealing if Devin loses both upcoming bouts? Perhaps the answer lies not in the result but in whether Haney shows competitiveness in his performances. Davis seems to be hitting a wall in terms of worthwhile opponents at 135 pounds, particularly with Shakur Stevenson dodging challenges by taking on easier opponents since his unexpected exposure by Edwin De Los Santos in 2023.
On Shakur’s part, he seems to be eyeing a lucrative match-up with Tank, and promoter Eddie Hearn is strategically lining up less threatening opponents for him, maintaining his undefeated record. Some might see Stevenson as mere hype, so it’s understandable why Davis wouldn’t be eager to engage with him. As for Keyshawn Davis, Tank’s thoughts are direct; Keyshawn’s physicality suggests he should be fighting at a higher weight class, like middleweight, rather than at 135.
A complicating factor for any Tank-Haney showdown is the fact that Haney is planning to transition up to 147 pounds. Asking him to step back down to 140 for a clash with Tank could be overly ambitious. Even if Haney does manage to hit that weight, he’d likely regain weight and end up quite a bit heavier. A rehydration clause limiting him like Ryan’s fight negotiation wouldn’t be in the cards, considering Ryan ended up looking drained.
In an exclusive chat, Gervonta Davis reaffirmed his position: “I’d definitely consider facing Devin, but he’s got some proving to do. Whether he shines in his next fight or even puts up a good fight against Ryan without winning, I believe it would still make for an exciting matchup,” Davis mentioned when talking to Bubba Dub about the prospects of meeting Haney in the ring. He reminisced, “Given our history, even as youngsters and coming up in the sport, our rivalry has been intense. It’d unquestionably be a thrilling encounter.”
Hearing Davis talk about the possibility of a fight will undoubtedly be music to the ears of Devin Haney and his father, Bill Haney, who have been long clamoring for this face-off.
