Manchester United co-owner Avram Glazer made it clear that he and his family have no intentions of parting with their stakes, even after a reporter approached him in Miami to press the issue.
Despite selling a minority stake to Sir Jim Ratcliffe last year, the Glazers continue to hold significant control over the Red Devils. This ongoing involvement has not sat well with the fans. Since their leveraged buyout in 2005, United supporters have frequently protested against the Glazers’ ownership.
There was some hope that the Glazers would consider selling their entire stake and severing ties with the club once Ratcliffe entered the scene. However, Avram Glazer’s recent remarks suggest that’s not on the cards.
Sky Sports caught up with Glazer on the street, asking him repeatedly if he or his family were planning to sell their share anytime soon. They also questioned him about the scrutiny directed at Ratcliffe for his severe cost-cutting actions, which have led to numerous staff layoffs.
Initially, Glazer avoided directly answering and remarked, “I’m on my way to see the president right now; I don’t think it’s appropriate to talk about it right now.” Despite the reporter’s persistence, Glazer eventually gave a straightforward response: “No!”
This statement coincided with news that United had crossed the £1 billion mark in interest payments since the Glazers took over. Additionally, it was highlighted that the club spent £14.5 million just to part ways with Erik ten Hag (£10.4 million) and Dan Ashworth (£4.1 million).
Further exacerbating their financial woes, missing out on the Champions League has slashed broadcasting revenues, causing operating profits to tumble from £27.5 million to a mere £3 million. United is gearing up to take on David Moyes’ Everton at Goodison Park this Saturday.
