Floyd Schofield Sr recently shared his thoughts in light of his son being unexpectedly pulled from the scheduled fight against Shakur Stevenson this weekend due to a sudden illness. Initially, Schofield Sr accused Team Stevenson of foul play, suggesting they might have poisoned his son, but he has since retracted such accusations to sidestep any legal troubles until he has concrete evidence to back his claims. Here’s a closer look at what Schofield Sr had to say.
On Why His Son Couldn’t Fight Shakur
"We didn’t decide to pull out ourselves. The British Board of Commission took the step to withdraw Floyd because he had to be hospitalized, which meant he couldn’t compete. We asked them if he could still go ahead with the fight, assuring them that we’d be out by the next day, make the weight, and were eager to continue, but they turned us down. Their decision wasn’t something we could contest."
Recounting What Happened Before the Hospitalization
"I was bombarded with messages suggesting that someone might have tampered with something causing my son’s condition. Floyd himself was feeling odd and warned me, saying, ‘Dad, something’s off.’ After I informed the Saudi host accompanying us, they got a doctor to check on Floyd, and the doctor insisted we rush him to the hospital due to the seriousness of the situation."
Hospital Details on His Son’s Condition
"They conducted toxicology tests, but didn’t reveal much. The Saudi team was incredibly supportive, staying with us the entire time and ensuring Floyd had the best medical care available. We’re still waiting on test results, so they haven’t given any specific feedback yet.
"Ultimately, it feels like they’re pointing to his body simply failing, but we really don’t know the cause. I have to be careful with my words, but I can wholeheartedly say the Saudi hosts treated us exceptionally well.
"Floyd’s since been released from the hospital, currently resting. He’s still feeling groggy and is physically weak, but with a couple more days, he should be back to normal and ready to return home."
On the Belief of Intentional Harm
"I received tons of messages, yet in my heart, I know something went wrong with my son. Perhaps it was just a severe allergic reaction to mushrooms—we really don’t know yet. For now, I must tread carefully with my statements to avoid any legal issues.
"I lack concrete evidence pointing to any particular individual or action, so what stands is this: Floyd will recuperate, he’ll bounce back, and we’re eager for his return to the ring.
"I trust the toxicology results will clarify everything, but I’m not concerned with what Shakur’s team claims—they’ll say whatever suits them. We know our truth, and all we can do is recover, forgive those involved, and move onwards. Sometimes, you have to let a higher power handle the battles…"
