The Seattle Seahawks are gearing up with a refreshed lineup that now boasts quarterback Sam Darnold, fresh off a Pro Bowl season in 2024. They’ve also added seasoned wide receiver Cooper Kupp and defensive powerhouse DeMarcus Lawrence to the mix.
However, they might need a boost in their secondary to support standout cornerback Devon Witherspoon. In a bid to strengthen their roster, the Seahawks welcomed back a familiar face this past Monday. Former player Shaquill Griffin, who earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2019, returned for a visit with the team, according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson.
Griffin made a name for himself during his four seasons at the University of Central Florida, racking up 27 defended passes and six interceptions before being snagged by Seattle in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. At that time, the Seahawks were not quite a Super Bowl threat as they had been in their consecutive near-championship runs, yet Griffin’s presence kept them in the competitive arena.
During his rookie season, Griffin tallied 15 defended passes, two tackles for loss, and 59 total tackles, of which 50 were solo. Two years later, his stellar performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection as he logged 13 defended passes, two tackles for loss, and 65 total tackles, including 45 solo.
After he parted ways with Seattle post-2020, Griffin’s career took him across four different teams, with a 2024 stint at the Minnesota Vikings. That season, he managed six defended passes, two interceptions, and 41 total tackles, with 33 being solo efforts.
Adding Griffin could give head coach Mike Macdonald some much-needed depth and insurance for the defensive backfield. The Seahawks, who had a surprise playoff berth in 2022, have since missed the postseason for two straight years. This year, they’re banking on their fresh crew to elevate their game throughout the fall and winter seasons.
