Liverpool has received some advice to steer clear of pursuing Matheus Cunha, even though the Wolves forward is gaining quite a name for himself and attracting attention from several major Premier League teams.
The Brazilian striker has been impressive this season, racking up 12 league goals, including a spectacular one against Liverpool. His dazzling performances haven’t gone unnoticed, capturing the interest of big clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Nottingham Forest, who are all reportedly keeping a close eye on him.
Despite Wolves locking Cunha into a fresh contract that runs until 2029, there’s a catch – a £60m release clause, which could pave the way for a potential move next summer.
Amidst all the rumors about his next move, Chelsea icon and ex-Sunderland manager Gustavo Poyet opines that Liverpool doesn’t really need to go after the 25-year-old, especially if Mohamed Salah continues to grace Anfield in the coming seasons.
“Diving into the transfer market right now isn’t necessary for Liverpool!” Poyet expressed to Makthavare. “Sitting pretty with a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League standings and boasting a strong team lineup, there’s no urgent call for significant changes.”
While Poyet recognizes Cunha’s capabilities, he insists Liverpool already boasts the attacking might needed to clinch major accolades. “Cunha is certainly talented, but he isn’t pivotal to Liverpool clinching success. They simply need to keep up their game-winning streak, which they’ve mastered.”
On the other hand, Liverpool’s incoming manager, Arne Slot, has praised Cunha, noting the player’s readiness to shine on the largest stages. “When comparing leagues, he’s the type of player I discuss,” Slot shared. “Take the 17th-placed team in the Dutch league – no player there could play for the likes of Ajax, PSV, or Feyenoord. But Cunha? He’s got the chops to star for any of England’s top five teams.”
Slot’s perspective underscores the depth of the Premier League, pointing out why matchups against the lower-ranking teams in England are notably tougher compared to their European counterparts.
With the £60m release clause hanging in the balance this summer, the uncertainty around Cunha’s next destination remains. While Wolves might strive to retain their star forward, the mounting interest from elite clubs poses a significant challenge.
The fate of Liverpool’s transfer aspirations may hinge on Salah’s decision. Should the Egyptian genius stay put at Anfield, the Reds might opt to pass on Cunha. However, if Salah departs, the Wolves striker could potentially feature in Slot’s revamped Liverpool side.
