Over the weekend, Filip Hrgovic secured a unanimous decision victory over Joe Joyce, marking Joyce’s fourth defeat in five bouts. While acknowledging Joyce’s resilience and ability to challenge any opponent, Hrgovic expressed to Sky Sports that it might be in Joyce’s best interest to step away from boxing for the sake of his health.
“He’s been through a lot of grueling matches and taken quite a few hits,” Hrgovic remarked. “With his open fighting style and less-than-stellar defense, he’s capable of giving anyone a tough time in the ring. But in my view, it’s time for him to retire for his health’s sake. Ultimately, staying healthy beyond boxing is the most important thing.”
Hrgovic praised Joyce for his toughness and achievements but suggested that his prime years are behind him. It’s a sentiment he stresses is meant respectfully, urging retirement out of concern, not criticism. Frank Warren, the Queensberry promoter, echoed these sentiments after the match, emphasizing that Joyce should seriously contemplate his future in the sport.
At 39, judging by his recent performances, Joyce seems to have reached his peak with little prospect for further development. Thus, the rationale for continuing his career seems limited. However, the ultimate decision rests with Joyce, and we’ll have to await his choice regarding his path forward.
