On Thursday, the Jets bolstered their tight end lineup by signing free agent Stone Smartt. Smartt, who is 26, spent the previous three years with the Chargers. During the last season, he managed to secure 16 receptions for a total of 208 yards, though he didn’t score any touchdowns.
As depicted in a photo of him donning a Chargers jersey, Smartt inked a one-year contract with the Jets. It’s worth noting that the Jets are currently facing a shortage in the tight end department, especially since last year’s starter, Tyler Conklin, remains a free agent on the market.
On the defensive side of things, the Jets decided to re-sign linebacker Jamin Davis. Originally a first-round pick back in 2021 by the Commanders, Davis joined the Jets closer to the end of last season but didn’t take to the field. Last year, he participated in nine games split between the Washington team and the Vikings, though he didn’t start in any of them.
The Jets didn’t stop there. They also brought in defensive tackle Byron Cowart, who is coming off a season with the Bears. Cowart, 28, showed some promise, racking up 2.5 sacks over 15 games. He initially entered the league as a fifth-round pick by the Patriots in 2019.
