Ruben Amorim’s early tenure as Manchester United’s head coach has been a rocky start, marked by 10 losses in his first 25 matches across all competitions. Since stepping into Erik ten Hag’s shoes, Amorim has faced the intense pressure that comes with the job at Old Trafford. Every minor error is scrutinized on a global scale.
The Portuguese manager, armed with a fresh set of strategies, has faced challenges, including disagreements with high-profile players and a string of injuries that have sidelined key players in his preferred lineup. Now, according to Football Insider, Amorim is reportedly second-guessing his decision to leave Sporting CP for Manchester halfway through the season.
Amorim finds himself in a tough spot. He was handed an ultimatum by INEOS executives – a take-it-or-leave-it offer that left him with little choice but to accept. Unfortunately, his vision hasn’t panned out as planned, especially given the club’s inconsistent recruitment strategy. This has made adjusting to the new team all the more challenging. Furthermore, Amorim has been taken aback by the players’ lower-than-expected skill level, a stark contrast to the reputation they carry.
“Man United boss Ruben Amorim has confided in friends that he believes accepting the position at Old Trafford was a mistake,” Football Insider reports. Sources suggest the 40-year-old manager feels he should have waited for the summer instead of caving to United’s pressing demand. In preparation for the role, he held the squad in much higher regard, only to be “personally shocked by how bad the players are.”
Adding fuel to the fire, the support from INEOS has been lacking. They’ve only brought in two new defenders while sending three attackers out on loan, which hasn’t helped the team’s struggle to find the back of the net. As it stands, the Red Devils are sitting at a dismal 14th place in the Premier League standings and are already out of the domestic cup competitions. Their hope for European competition hinges solely on the Europa League.
However, Amorim doesn’t view their Europa League campaign as the be-all-end-all. Their recent defeat to Real Sociedad, marred by contentious VAR and refereeing decisions, reflects the rough patch they’re enduring. The situation is so challenging that Amorim has openly expressed a desire to start from scratch.
With Arsenal looming on the horizon, Amorim’s challenges are set to intensify. Yet, he and his squad must weather the storm until the season’s end. With any luck, future support will help turn things around for him and the team.
