Dan Lanning, the head coach for the Oregon Ducks, has secured a new two-year contract extension keeping him with the team until 2030, according to a source familiar with the details. This updated agreement will bring Lanning’s average yearly earnings to over $10 million, positioning him among the elite earners in college football coaching.
This extension is awaiting the nod from the Oregon board of trustees, who have a meeting slated for Friday. On their agenda is a segment titled “employment contracts for intercollegiate football coaches,” indicating that this new deal will likely be a topic of discussion.
Yahoo Sports was the first to break the news about Lanning’s contract update.
The Ducks had a stellar season recently, going undefeated with a 13-0 record during the regular season. They clinched the Big Ten championship in their debut year in the conference and impressively held the No. 1 spot nationally for eight weeks. Unfortunately, their journey was halted by Ohio State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
At just 38 years old, Lanning has amassed a 35-6 record in his tenure at Oregon. This is his inaugural role as a college head coach following a successful stint at Georgia. During his time there, he served three years as the defensive coordinator and another as the coach for outside linebackers.
With his salary increase, Lanning finds himself among the ranks of top-tier college football coaches like Ryan Day from Ohio State, Kirby Smart from Georgia, Dabo Swinney from Clemson, and Steve Sarkisian from Texas.
Recently, Day secured a new contract that elevated his annual pay to over $12 million, making him the second-highest earner after Smart, who leads with more than $13 million yearly. Swinney earns upwards of $11 million per annum, and Texas recently awarded Sarkisian a new deal boosting his salary beyond $11 million.
