Emma Raducanu found herself in a tense situation recently in Dubai due to an unsettling encounter with a stalker.
Looking to bounce back, Raducanu is planning a return to Indian Wells and is taking steps to ensure her safety.
An unsettling episode unfolded when Raducanu, visibly emotional, sought refuge behind the chair umpire during her match against Karolina Muchova. The trigger? She spotted a stalker just two games in.
Thankfully, Dubai police acted promptly, arresting the man, who was a tourist causing distress. According to the Dubai Media Office, “After Raducanu’s complaint, the tourist was detained for his actions, which included taking photos, leaving notes, and causing discomfort during the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.”
Deciding against pursuing charges, Raducanu accepted a statement from the man, similar to a restraining order, ensuring he would stay away.
Raducanu’s team shared with British media that the persistent follower had also turned up in Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and Doha. He had made contact in a Dubai cafe and appeared at both of her matches.
Despite this unnerving experience and her second-round loss in Dubai, Raducanu has elected not to pause her career, choosing instead to compete at Indian Wells.
The 2021 US Open winner will have comprehensive security at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, with the WTA ready to implement additional measures if needed.
Previously, Raducanu entered the BNP Paribas Open on a wild card, progressing to the third round before losing to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets.
Today marks a joyous occasion for Raducanu as she returns to Tennis Paradise, enjoying a practice session with Tournament Director Tommy Haas.
